On Friday, Jan. 30, the Roanoke College men’s basketball team had dinner with Charles “Lefty” Driesell in Virginia Beach, the night before the team’s match-up against Virginia Wesleyan College.
Driesell is a legendary figure in college basketball. As one of the top 10 winningest coaches in Division I men’s basketball history, he has coached four different schools in the NCAA March Madness tournament. Most notably, Driesell coached the Maryland Terrapins for 17 years.
At the dinner, Driesell spoke to the student-athletes about the good fortune they had to play a sport at a school like Roanoke. He shared advice about avoiding the drawbacks that can come with such good fortune, and encouraged the team to fully embrace their time as student-athletes.
Charlie Moir, former Roanoke basketball coach from 1967-73, is a friend of Driesell’s. Moir’s son, Page Moir, currently is Roanoke’s men’s basketball coach.
